My way to eating smart
Being led to sports from an early age with volleyball as the main sport, my childhood was very much about a school-training-tournament schedule. After finishing university I started playing beachvolleyball, hiking, ski touring, kitesurfing… taking crazy challenges and testing the limits of my body, very often exhausting myself while being happy I had pushed my limits further.
I was lucky to have inherited a subtle figure. I could eat any junk food and never took care of it too much. At that time I could not imagine my life without lots of meat, cheese, dairy produce, bread, pasta, potatoes. It did not do me any obvious harm. So why would I change anything?
Being curious how my body reacts, I did a 3-month relatively tough cleaning cure. Despite feeling okay before, I realized after two weeks I felt very different. Much better. What I had considered as “normal” was somehow not happening anymore: being tired after lunch, needing something sweet in the afternoon, losing temper when being hungry (my husband is really happy about that one!), getting hypoglycemic during sports, not wanting to get up in the morning – all that was suddenly gone. I felt light and energetic. And this is where my discovery journey started – I was curious to know more.
I read every book I found on various food philosophies: clean eating, vegetarian, vegan, raw, paleo, ayurveda, Chinese medicine, macrobiotic, psychology of food, neuroplasticity of brain etc. I never entirely agree with one strictly defined direction – some of them contradict one another, other are so extreme that they basically exclude you from social life. So I started picking the best out of each. And here we go with Smart Eating!
How about the cooking?
I spend my working day in my beloved job in banking. After that I run directly to my training. Then I dedicate the evenings to my studies. Not really too much time left for lengthy cooking. I believe no haute-cuisine is necessary for everyday life. Mostly I just need to be quick. That is why I enjoy super simple recipes prepared within not more than 20 minutes. I enjoy discovering new quick and tasty foods and the variety of different ways of preparation: boiling, steaming, eating fresh, frying, grilling, baking… Eaten in whatever amount my body just requires and I keep my optimum weight since months.
And when I travel and have no chance to cook? Never mind, then I can at least select the right food out of the vast offer out there – there is always something acceptable!
I have no doubt that everybody can enjoy delicious food and feel good in their body at the same time. Try it out!
